Snowdrop cheese from Market Rasen based Cote Hill Dairy named Supreme Champion at British Cheese Awards in Bath.
Cote Hill Dairy, a local Lincolnshire cheesemaker says it’s a dream come true to win the title of Supreme Champion at the 28th British Cheese Awards.
The cheese that helped secure the title is a new mould-ripened fresh cheese called Snowdrop – made by Michael and Mary Davenport using milk from their own herd. The delicious cheese has beaten more than 600 other varieties from across the UK and Ireland, taking the top title at the event held at the Bath and West Showground, in Somerset.
Launched just over a year ago, Snowdrop was named in honour of Cynthia Davenport, who started the dairy at Cote Hill. Named after Cynthia’s favourite flower found growing around the farm in Osgodby, near Market Rasen.
Soft, smooth and velvety, Snowdrop is a raw cow’s milk cheese, similar in style to a French St Felicien, and varies throughout the seasons as the pastures change.
“As a small producer, we are delighted and honoured to be recognised with this prestigious award,” said Mary Davenport, of Cote Hill. “It was a huge surprise and totally unexpected as winning Supreme Champion at the British Cheese Awards is a cheesemaker’s dream.
Cote Hill produces a range of six different artisan cheeses – Cote Hill Red, White, Yellow, Blue, Cote Hill Lindum, and their newest supreme championship-winning Snowdrop cheese.
At the cheese shed visitors can use the cheese vending machine which is stocked with Cote Hill Cheeses plus Lincolnshire Poacher cheese and butter. Next to that the ‘Local Provisions’ vending machine stocks Lincolnshire Plum Bread, Jenny’s Jams, Stokes Tea & Coffee and local free-range eggs.
There is also a coffee vending machine, which uses freshly ground coffee from Stokes Tea & Coffee and their own fresh milk to create raw milk lattes. The public can also buy the raw milk in glass bottles.
Shop at The Cheese Shed @ Cote Hill Farm to support a local producer, see the herd of more than 80 Friesian and Brown Swiss cows and be reassured of the provenance of what you are buying.
