nature tourism in Lincolnshire
Nature holds a special place in people’s hearts. A recent National Trust survey of 70,000 respondents revealed that, when unpromptedly asked ‘what really matters to you’, nature ranked as the top priority. Lincolnshire is embracing this passion with a host of initiatives to enhance its natural attractions and experiences.
ENHANCED WALKING AND RIDING ROUTES
Viking Way:
£370k has been invested in improvements, including new footbridges, gates, surfaces, signage, and a fresh promotional video.
200+ Walks:
Improved mapping and search features have made county council walks even more accessible. The Louth Navigation Trust walks and horse-riding routes have also been added.
King Charles III England Coast Path:
Nearing completion, the sections from Mablethorpe to Skegness and Skegness to Sutton Bridge are now open. Businesses along the path can access a dedicated toolkit to leverage new opportunities.
NEW AND EXPANDED NATURE RESERVES
Lincolnshire Coronation Coast National Nature Reserve:
Covering 33 sq km along 30km of coastline, this reserve combines Donna Nook and Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe with an additional 2,350ha, making it two-thirds larger.
Sandilands Nature Reserve:
This former golf courseis being rewilded into a 30ha haven for migrating and breeding birds, with reedbeds, walkways, and a visitor centre.
Boothby Wildlands:
Near Grantham, this rewilding project is transitioning from traditional agriculture to natural regeneration, creating a promising birdwatching site.
Wilder Doddington:
Since 2021, this estate has been transforming into a nature-rich landscape with ponds, wetlands and wild ponies. A Wild House community space is set to open in late 2025.
INNOVATIVE CONSERVATION PROJECTS
Lincoln and Witham Landscape Recovery:
Farmers and landowners are working together to create a connected, nature-rich landscape along the Upper Witham Valley. This initiative supports wildlife corridors and climate-resilient practices, spanning areas like Whisby Nature Park and Ancient Woodlands.
