The Role of a Sommelier
A sommelier works closely with the head sommelier and Front of House team to recommend and sell wines to guests, which complement their menu choices, suit their tastes and match their budget.
He / she also helps to develops the wine list.
The responsibilities of the sommelier are:
- Cellar/ stock management
- Identify wines which are not of the right quality and know what action to take
- Make sure sufficient service equipment and wine lists are available
- Present the wine list at an appropriate time for the customer
- Offer assistance to customers choosing wine
- Promote wines which will enhance the flavours of the food
Skills, Experience and Personality Needed
- A knowledge of wines
- Great communication skills
